Knotting skills of the ancient seafarers

Ropes and knots are among the oldest and most useful technologies ever developed by man, predating the wheel, the axe and probably the use of fire. Today, they are well on the way to becoming an obsolete technology. In the days of sailing ships, sailors had to be experts at tying ropes. For the safety of the ship and the crew, the knots had to be tied correctly. On a fully rigged ship, the several miles of rope comprised thousands of knots. There was a different knot for each task. Knot-tying became a craft in its own right, practised for long months at sea.

Knot boards

Knot boards were made either as an aid to training on board ships or in a naval training facility. They were also made to demonstrate the knot-maker's skills, to be displayed or given away in rigging workshops or equipment stores.

Our knot boards are all handmade. There is a lot of art and care in every detail. We make every knot by hand. Designing, cutting, nailing, writing names on stickers...

Knot boards are perfect unique souvenirs for nautical museum stores, gift ideas for companies, special items for sale in souvenir stores, etc. We are able to make design changes to the knot boards on request to customise them for our customers, e.g. by adding the customer's logo. We only sell our products wholesale. Please contact us by email.
